Happy Holiday s! While this year’s festivities might be scaled down a little because of the coronavirus, many traditions will still continue on. This can be a fun time of year for Man’s Best Friend, but it can also be a bit dangerous. Read on as a local Leonardtown, MD vet offers some advice on keeping your canine buddy happy, healthy, and safe over the holidays.

Don’t forget to put a few things in Fido’s stocking! A new doggy bed is a great option. You can also get that cute tail going by giving your pooch toys or treats. Grooming supplies, such as paw balm, dental chews, and pet shampoo, make great stocking stuffers. Don’t forget to snap some photos of your furry pal having fun with his new things!

Food

Fido is really, really good at getting us to share tidbits. Be very careful here, as many of our favorite foods are toxic to dogs. Some things on the no-no list include garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; avocado; pitted fruits; grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; alcohol; meat on the bone; raw dough or yeast; and anything that contains xylitol and/or a lot of salt, sugar, or fat. Ask your vet for more information.

Decorations

Keep your canine companion in mind as you hang decorations. Anything small or sharp should be kept out of paws’ reach, as should anything with string, threads, or batteries. This includes ornaments, tinsel, lights, ornament hooks, ribbons, garlands, and even that cute singing snowman your grandma gave you. If you get a real tree, you’ll need to cover the water. It could contain chemical residues, which aren’t safe for Fido to drink. Many holiday plants, such as holly, ivy, yew, and mistletoe, are also toxic to dogs.

Stress

The holidays can also be difficult for pets emotionally. Loud noises, schedule changes, travel, being boarded, guests, and commotion are all quite stressful to Fido. Changes in your pup’s environment can also upset him. Even that giant inflatable Santa in the neighbor’s yard could be an issue! Pay extra attention to your furry best friend, and indulge him with extra toys, treats, and playtime. This is the perfect time of year to settle in with a hot beverage, a good movie, and your faithful pet.
