Feline Folklore
August 1, 2021

As mysterious little furballs, felines have certainly earned more than their fair share of myths and legends. Fluffy has inspired a rather impressive collection of urban and rural tales. In this article, a local veterinarian highlights a few of them.

Luck

Felines have long been associated with both good and bad luck. In Western mythology, black kitties have long been considered unlucky. This is rather unfortunate, with these superstitions continuing to this day, and playing a direct role in the low adoption rates of black cats. In other cultures and eras, black felines have been considered good luck. In some instances, the coloring of the cat determines her luck. For instance, Buddhist culture states that kitties with dark fur bring gold, while lighter-colored felines bring silver. In Russia, Russian Blue cats are considered lucky. China connects luck with age, with older cats being the lucky ones.

Cat Goddesses

Cats have long been associated with many different goddesses. The most well-known might be Egypt’s goddess Bastet, who was often depicted in feline form. Ailuros is the ancient Greek’s own feline goddess. But, Greek goddesses Artemis and Athena have also been depicted as cats. The Norse have a goddess, Freya, who drove a chariot pulled by two big cats. The Hindu goddesses Durga and Parvati were also closely associated with large kitties.

Pussy Willow

One of the most enduring myths about our feline friends is the story of the pussy willow . This fable starts with a playful kitten litter chasing butterflies on a sunny spring day. Sadly, the kittens fall into a river. Their desperate mother meows out in distress. Hearing her terrified cries, a willow tree on the riverbank lowers its branches into the water. The kittens grab the branches and climb to safety, soaking wet and crying. According to the tale, since then and every spring, willow trees grow extended branches with furry ‘kitten’ buds.

Immortality

Let’s not forget that old belief about cats having nine lives. We know this one isn’t true. While some cats do have an unbelievable ability to escape dangerous situations, this is usually only by sheer luck. Keep your furry friend safe and sound indoors. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to provide your kitty an overload of fun toys, soft beds, treats, and catnip.
